Style Icon: Jean Truscott from "Breathless"

Hello all you lovely people!
It is once again time for one of my Style Icons. And since last time's style icon was from the tv series Breathless and I mentioned that there was another lady in that television series that inspired me, I though I'd share that lady with you today.

Today's style icon is the character Jean Truscott from Breathless, played by the gorgeous Zoe Boyle. Jean is a former nurse, that is settling into life as a housewife to a young gynaecologist surgeon. The series is set in the early 1960's London and Jean is young and hip. She dresses in what at the 60's would have been real modern clothes. She has a flirty and sexy style with tight-fitting dresses and cool coats with awesome silhouettes.

My favourite outfit of Jean's is a black, tight and sexy dress, with dainty gloves and a stunning hat (seen below). She looks a million in that gorgeous outfit, and I seriously want the exact replica of that dress, it's so chic and lovely.

Like I said last time, I wouldn't necessarily recommend Breathless, but if your interested in vintage fashion or costume design then it's a very beautiful and suave series.

Style Icon: Elizabeth Powell from "Breathless"

It is time for another one of my Style Icons!

The style icon of today is another fictional character (surprise surprise) from the ITV period drama Breathless, that only ran for one series in 2013. The series is set in early 1960's England and revolves around the lives of a group of doctors and nurses at a gynaecology ward. It stars great actors and the show started very well, however the plot was lacking, it was a bit stupid and I understand why it wasn't picked up for a second series. However, it is a beautiful series visually. I wouldn't recommend you to watch it if it wasn't for the amazing, suave look of the show. The costumes are amazing and I've found not one, but two style icons in this series.

We'll start with the character Elizabeth Powell played by Natasha Little. Elizabeth is the wife of chief gynaecological surgeon Otto Powell and she's everything you'd expect of a doctor's wife in the 1960's. She's elegant and ladylike and it shows in her wardrobe. Since it is set in the early 1960's there is still some influence of the 1950's look, at least in the clothes of Elizabeth who would be a bit old-fashioned and modest.

Elizabeth wears beautiful, classic dresses and coats, and has a very glamorous air about her. The white dress with a black floral pattern (seen below) has been a favourite dress of mine since I saw it, I find myself still thinking about this dress, and I am very happy to say that I have something quite similar to it, that I have yet to wear. She also wears a lot of dainty gloves and has some beautiful details to her outfits.

I was very inspired by Elizabeth's style when watching Breathless. I find myself trying to emulate her outfits whenever I can. So I won't say you need to watch Breathless, it's not that good, but if you're looking to get a bit of vintage inspiration it is good.

Hello everyone! I'm back!!
I haven't been very good at updating the blog recently, but that will change starting... Now!

I had a (big-ish) presentation at my department about my research project, and I had been preparing for it forever! I felt like I learned how to breathe again after I finished the presentation. My nerves were all over the place, and for months I had it at the back of my mind, so it is definitely a load off my shoulders!

Do you guys get nervous when having a big presentation? How do you "attack" it?

I personally had to almost pretend another persona for myself. I'm not the kind of person that want attention, and I don't take much space. I'm a fairly small person by personality, not physically (although I'm only 1,57m so I'm not very big...) and I think I'm rather mellow.

So when all eyes are on me, I feel like I'm not loud and big enough to carry it. It is definitely something I have to work on though, because in my field we have to present our research and results regularly.

A word about my outfit. I decided to call it "Le Meow" because I always feel like a beret gives an outfit a French feel. And the meow is obvious. This lovely dress from Larmoni was an instant buy for me. I just had to have it when I saw the cute print!

Style Icon: Zooey Deschanel

Hope you are all doing well today!
This is the third instalment of my series "Style Icon" where I introduce you to my own style icons. Zooey Deschanel has been a style icon for me since I first saw her in (500) Days of Summer back in the late 2000's. She wears a beautiful mixture of old and new, vintage and fresh and is like myself interested in the style of 50's and 60's.

Since Zooey got the part of Jess Day in New Girl she has been a constant inspiration to me. Every week she wears at least one outfit that I want, and sometimes she even wears things that are already in my wardrobe.

I will always be excited to see what she wears because she's not afraid to look cute and sweet. She rocks a lot of polka dots, and she adds bows to her hair. Zooey has a retro, fun and girly sense of style that really appeals to me.

Style Icon: Chuck from "Pushing Daisies"

Hello all you lovely people!

It is time for another one of my style icons, and this one I have actually mentioned previously when the blog was still a baby.

Pushing Daisies is one of those TV series that I wonder why they cancelled. It was so unique, quirky and beautiful. For those who may not know, it stars the handsome Lee Pace as Ned the Pie maker who has the ability to bring back the dead to life with his touch. Ned's sweetheart in the series is Charlotte "Chuck" Charles played by Anna Friel. Anna Friel is gorgeous in basically anything, but they also happen to put her character in a lot of vintage, 50's and 60's inspired clothing. Chuck's style is impeccable, it is feminine and girly, elegant and graceful with a touch of quirk.

I want to wear everything Chuck wore in the two series of this TV show, and even had a dress made for me by Gertrude Made that was inspired by one of Chuck's dresses. See the post about that dress here.

Chuck is actually one of the people (yeah yeah, I know she and the wonderful world of Pushing Daisies are fictional) that inspires me most when getting dressed. She is one of my style icons that has the most influence on me, and I've even purchased two vintage dresses because they were a little bit similar to ones that Chuck wore (they will come to the blog as soon as the weather warms up a bit). I feel like Chuck's looks aren't really contemporary (which I think is why they appeal to me) but they're not outdated either, so they work in a modern setting.

If you haven't seen Pushing Daisies I suggest that you do. It is one of my favourite TV shows, especially the first series. It's colourful in every sense of that word. And the wardrobe is amazing!

Silly nilly

I hope you are all doing great. I'm posting this a bit earlier than I had planned, but it's because I couldn't sit on this outfit any longer, I love it so!!

This dress from Dear Creatures (that I got via ModCloth) is one of my favourite dresses. It's business on the top and party on the bottom. I adore how it is classic and quirky at the same time. I love all the little details, and I enjoy wearing it so much. I especially like wearing it with red accents, which I have here.

One of the red accessories I had in this outfit was my red beret. On instagram (@curlsncakes), I asked if wearing a beret indoors was silly?

I got plenty of kind and nice answers saying that it wasn't silly and to go for it.
I did go for it, and wore it all night for a party that took place indoors. And I didn't feel silly at all. But I came to the conclusion that if you wear something you feel comfortable in, even if it is a little bit silly, it won't matter. You have to wear what makes you feel great, without minding what others think. And so I did, and it was all fine.
