Once in a Blue Moon

Hello all you lovely souls!
The weather is warming up nicely. It is quite hot here, and all the trees are finally green and lush.

These photos were taken in the beginning of May when it was just starting to get warmer and the trees were still bare.

I wore this when I was holding a speech for a group of biomedicine students (I studied biomedicine myself), talking about what they can expect of life as a PhD-student and giving some advice. I prepared, and was pumped up, but was met by a small group of uninterested students. Some international students that sat way back in the lecture hall even pointed at me and laughed for themselves, thinking I won't notice.

The whole experience made me realise what a hard job teachers have, that have to stand in front of students every single day!

Funny thing, this outfit was actually unintentionally inspired by a fictional teacher. As soon as I put on the blue cardi over the dress I felt like I recognised the outfit, but it wasn't until afterwards that it struck me! Jess Day from New Girl, wore a lovely green dress with a blue cardigan in the episode Fancyman Part 1 (1x17). Like I told you previously, Zooey Deschanel is a big style inspiration for me.

Cardigan: La Redoute (old)
Flats: ModCloth (old)

Anyway, my experience with holding an inspirational speech for the students didn't quite go as I had hoped or planned. The whole thing was a bit disappointing, but there was one super interested student that came and talked to me after, so even if I only reached the one person, at least I did that!

Any teachers out there? How on earth do you amazing people do it day after day?

Hope you are having a wonderful weekend. I had a very rough week at work, so I am doing some major relaxing.

Also a quick reminder, there are still some days left on the giveaway that I am hosting together with Book of Deer. For more info check this post here.

Much love,

  2. Oh that's a shame for your presentation! However, it's great that you still think about the positive of the experience somehow. I want to be a teacher, so I know I'll have to face some annoying pupils. Let's hope it doesn't drive me crazy haha. Your dress is super cute, I love how bright and merry it looks! :D

    1. Meh - it's fine. At least I reached one person, so that's enough for me.
      Oh really. A teacher - I think you'd be a great one!
Thank you so much gorgeous lady. I like the brightness of it too.

  3. Aw that sucks that there were rude people at your presentation. I'm sure it was really good though. You looked amazing, at least! I definitely love Zooey's style too and can see the inspiration in this outfit. I'm loving how your shoes match your cardigan and blue and green is one of my favorite color combos!

  4. You look lovely in green!

I teach middle school (14 year olds!), but I also do professional development classes for other teachers. I find adults to be much less fun as students sadly. I hope next time you have a better bunch of students and they appreciate your wisdom!

Yeah, gosh, I can't even imagine having to do that daily. But amazing teachers do that anyway I suppose.

  8. Oh my goodness, even before I read the description, I did a mental check-list (colourful? Check. Cardi? Check. Matching flats? Check) as to how Jessica Day this outfit was! The colours really suit you! Bless, at least you tried and I'm certain that it was worth listening to.. those that didn't missed out! As someone who intends to eventually become a lecturer, the thought that I'll become one of those uni lecturers who just presents the topics and then walks straight out once I'm done really pains and scares me.. I really do want to impart knowledge that I'm passionate about with people who can appreciate it as much as I do.

      Thank you.
Haha, yeah I certainly did try, thanks.
I totally understand you. Although I prefer doing research over teaching, I suppose teaching will also become a part of my life because I want to stay in the academics. And I would really like to connect with students also. Make them see that it is interesting, and have them feel the same passion I do.

  10. I feel you, Mona; especially the last part when a student approached you :).

I had my ups and downs as a Junior High School teacher. I struggled during my first year of teaching. I handled 9th graders for 4 consecutive years and 7th graders for 2 years now. From my experience, I realized that younger junior high school students tend to be more well-behaved and more interested in learning. They are extra sweet too! 9th graders, on the other hand, are a bit more difficult to handle. Behavior problems, if i must say, has been a perennial problem. But if eventually a teacher reaches out to them, figure out what kind of persons/learners they are (multiple intelligence, behaviorism, scaffolding, and many others are a big help for me!) and eventually we find better ways to teach our lessons and address behavioral problems. As a teacher, i see to it that at the end of the day, students learn not only concepts in my subject, but more inspiringly, values/virtues in life. It takes a big heart to become a teacher. My job is difficult, but i have learned to love it because i see that my students (at least many of them) learn and come back to me even after their graduation.

I can say that you were successful with your speech. Don't think otherwise. The fact that an interested student came to approach you is already suffice to prove that. It's heartwarming, right? That is one of the joys of being a teacher. :)

    1. I actually thought a lot about you.
I think it's probably a theme in all students, the younger they are the more interested they are in learning. But I sort of thought that uni students would be interested!!

Oh yes yes, absolutely - big heart in teachers! Very difficult the job you do and I am so thankful to the teachers I've had. One of my old teachers is actually one of my good friends now. So I appreciate teachers a lot, but even more so now after this experience.

Oh thank you. Yeah it is quite heartwarming. You feel like you reached them in a way.

Thank you for reading and commenting darling. It is very interesting to get a teachers perspective on it.

  11. I love how these two primary colors work so well together and the skirt on the dress seems wonderful. As for teachers, seeing as I'm both an aspiring teacher and have worked in a school for two years, it's definitely tough! If you don't gain a rapport with with the students then they definitely can eat you alive. I'm so sorry you didn't have the most positive experience, but even one student can make everything worth it in the end.

Oh gosh! Wow! Respect to you. Teaching seems so hard.
Yeah, I think it was fine. I wasn't too bummed about the experience, and it felt worthwhile because of that one student.

  14. Aw, this is such a cute look, Mona! I love the colors! And I'm so sorry to hear your presentation didn't go so well. :( I did substitute teaching (not nearly as difficult as being a real teacher, though!) for a couple years...and boy, teaching is not an easy job. You really need a thick skin! But, when you reach that one student, it does make it all worth it. :) I hope you had a lovely time relaxing this weekend!
